@timesthree5757 I disagree, because the "farmer's daughter" is also an archetype and it fulfills that role. I'm European and despite no cultural ties to an idea of "frontier"/"homesteading" I think the toyboy appreciation comes from disillusionment with adulthood and a yearning for the simplicity of our early lives. And back then girls would have their own groups separate from boys, tomboys being the only ones to cross the divide and play with us. The tomboy is an internal desire for someone to enter our lives and remove all the complications and baggage of relationships.

@regulustheron2565 Yeah tomboy doesn't mean pretending to be a boy, it's just a personality type that sometimes is reflected by the external appearence, but not always.

@regulustheron2565 Look up Natalie Imbruglia's videoclip for "Torn", even though she has a boy-ish look she doesn't present as masculine at all.

@latemanparodius5133 I don't think Japanese animation was that popular, because tomboys featured prominently in 90s and 2000s cartoons. If we assume that the writers and storyboarders for these cartoons were at least in their early 30s that would mean they could have been in the military in the 1980s and stationed in Japan. Even that's a stretch, I don't think there's major 80s anime influence regarding tomboys crossing over from Japan to Western cartoons.
