  5. Wagner was always in Ukraine since 2014. The Ukrainian SBU took over a defunct PMC hiring application and got resumes of Wagner, Redut, etc mercs citing service in Donbas as references. There's even a movie loosely based on the Donbas war where Utkin's self-insert character appears in the end to join the heroes. Actual battle footage shows that Ukrainian defenders are forced to endure several waves of prisoners, and then the trained mercs show up to clean up when the defenders are already battered, exhausted and low on ammo. Why send the trained assault detachment against a fresh and well supplied defender with the advantageous position? The part about people analyzing statements while Russia dug in is insane. So talking heads are running the war effort? While Russia dug in, Ukraine was training assault brigades. Not analyzing statements.

When the flanks were reinforced, direct assault was the only way. And direct assault always comes at the cost of lives. Wagner operated as stated, probably because they were the veteran Wagnerites. The prisoners under Wagner, those were meat. Confirmed by Ukrainians, captured Wagner, and Prigozhin himself (indirectly). Remember the recruitment drive speech? He said he needed assault infantry and to expect serious casualties.
