  4. +David -flamingsword1 I'm not downplaying the skill required to perform a water landing but all the dangers you mentioned are present in ground landings as well. It's a precision job all the way through and pilots do it every single day. Heck, carrier landings involve even more precision and again, all over the world there's people doing it every day.

  18. A lot of territory is flat land that is mostly indefensible against a superior foe. Defenses purposefully gave up that ground to get a better position and thin out the enemy and force it to stretch past its logistical capabilities. You're looking at the red color on a map while not thinking about the context. The US in similar situations has delivered an absolute curbstomping (situations such as the kickoff of 73 Easting where infantry fighting vehicles came across a superior number of main battle tanks with the defensive advantage, and still the lesser vehicles took out several tanks on their own before help arrived) while Russia seems to be dragged into ambush after ambush as their enemy recognizes that they can't trade blows and expect to survive.

The Gulf of Tonkin incident was also the cause for the US entering the Vietnam war. On August 2nd 1964 three North Vietnamese boats intercepted USS Maddox as it was penetrating into North Vietnamese waters, the Americans fired on the North Vietnamese and they retaliated with machine gun fire and torpedoes. On August 4th the USS Maddox reported being under attack due to radar signals caused by the bad weather. This second attack and the omission that the Americans had fired first on August 2nd were used as legal justification to enter the Vietnam war. The US also accused Iraq of keeping chemical weapon stockpiles even though they were complying with the UN. The US accused Saddam of supporting the 9/11 hijack even though there was no evidence. Dick Cheney and Colin Powell insisted that Iraq was using "mobile labs" to manufacture botulism and anthrax. After trailers that looked like mobile labs were discovered this seemed to vindicate the claims but both the UN and the Pentagon determines they were hydrogen generators for weather balloons.

  21. @bob marly oh yeah I understood that question more as doing geometric calculations (don't know the name of the concept in English) and the maths thing as solving calculus. The closest I can think of geometry calculations during flight is when you have your plane's relative position to ground radar, they give you the relative position of the enemy, and you calculate the vector for intercept.

They take care of your brakes, suspension, steering, your AC, the electric wiring, etc. There's so much stuff that goes wrong in ICE vehicles, and most times it's not the actual engine. A mechanic will probably replace more wiper motors in his career than ICE engines.

Not to mention the US was conducting the operation from halfway across the globe, while Russia is doing it from their own doorstep.
