Literally no other weapons program had an entire lifetime cost ever calculated that way. If we tried to track every inflation-adjusted dollar spent on the F-15 it probably reached a trillion, trillion and a half. Aviation is expensive and the F-35 is the first fighter jet developed in the social media age.

It's not the F-35s fault the opponents are incompetent. If anything, Syria had Russian-built defenses and even a Russian-manned S-400 system. Pakistan used Chinese fighters and defenses against Indian Rafales. Iranian air defenses were compromised by air strikes and drone ambushes prior to the F-35s going in. And Russian air defenses constantly fail to intercept drones and even shoot down civilian airliners.

It doesn't have insufficient range. 4th gen fighters need to carry 2-3 external tanks to match F-35 combat range. It also doesn't have insufficient payload. If you already went through 4 AMRAAMs in a fight with 5th and 6th gens, you already committed to many mistakes.
