Not only would a deadlier variant reduce transmission, we'd be talking about an unprecedented extinction event. We're more likely to have Yellowstone explode and then a huge meteor hit us right after. "There's no particular reason that wouldn't happen" - There's a myriad of reasons why, such as the fact that many are naturally immune, that you'd need a multitude of one in a quadrillion mutations to occur all in a specific order. You're more likely to win the lottery every week for a hundred years straight. "I wonder how high the stakes have to be raised before everyone would pull their heads out of their asses and get vaccinated" - But you can still carry it because it doesn't make you immune, which means mutations and new variants will keep happening. You can't snuff it out until the transmission chain ends, which mean enough people in the world being naturally immune and impossible to infect. This isn't achieved by a vaccine that reduces symptoms.
