The National Interest reads like it was written by feeding an AI with junk from other defense news blogs. They had an article titled "Desert Eagle: what you get when you mix an AR-15 with a gun" or something like that.

What? The F-15 is a large air superiority fighter while the MiG-29 is a lightweight fighter. They don't even belong to the same category. The MiG-21s in North Vietnamese use were mostly used with great success by ambushing bomb-carrying Phantoms part of strike packages.

@captainsledge7554 F-4s were definitely used as bombers. You can easily look up pictures of bomb-carrying Phantoms. You can even see pictures of Phantoms performing close air support with gunpods or rockets.

@captainsledge7554 "Especially once top gun was introduced to navy F4s." - The USAF didn't have Top Gun and their 1972-1973 kill ratio was higher than the Navy's. "And they didnt arm the planes at first with guns until later G models" - It was the E model. "and wild weasels" - The G wild weasel variant does not have a gun because it was replaced by the AN/APR-47 MAWS. "That's when the engagements turned around big time for the air force" - No, that's correlation not meaning causation. The USAF started counter-ambushing MiGs by pretending to be strike packages. And in 1972 the big boost to the kill ratio was the introduction of Teaball. The internal gun was used for 6 kills. Meanwhile the Phantom in USAF service scored over 80 kills with missiles. The Navy Phantoms did not have guns and scored about 40 kills. "They were not air superiority fighters" - I'm sorry, then what was the F-X program about? The F-15 was always designed for air superiority. "F15s were used for bombing they are multirole strike fighters" - That's the F-15E.

@captainsledge7554 The C only had limited air to ground capabilities and the Israelis were essentially the only ones to use it. The F-22 can also drop JDAMs and did it in Syria, doesn't make it a multirole. It was developed for air superiority. "So it's still same class as the mig 29" - It's not in the same "size" class. Using the outdated terms the F-15 is more of a heavy fighter like the Su-27 while the MiG-29 is a light fighter like the F-16. "is superior in alot of ways because mikoyan focused on maneuverability more than anything else" - And testing with East German MiG-29s showed that although the aircraft had capabilities, it was difficult for the pilot to operate in the middle of a fight. Focusing on maneuverability? They should have focused on reliable engines. "But the navy, as I said in that first sentence u corrected where it says navy f4 top gun.. had higher ratios" - For the early part of the war, because again the Navy had ships with radars giving them situational awareness. the USAF Phantoms had to cross areas where there was no radar coverage, and MiGs could go around the border to come from behind.
