You cannot take off from dirt roads, you need an actual paved road. Jesus Christ this game of telephone keeps getting worse. In a few months the Gripen will also be able to take off vertically.

@ГеоргийМурзич They never outnumbered the Russians. Their army was around 250k people. The Russian army, PMCs, DPR/LPR, etc were pretty much equal in numbers.

They are flying jets. But more often pulling vertically, lobbing rockets in a ballistic arc and then turning back.

Thrust vectoring is a meme. It's a physically larger, twin engine jet equivalent to the F-15. Those are the advantages. Not "thrust vectoring" goddamn. Any situation where thrust vectoring matters, the F-16 is flying up it's own ass to beat the Sukhoi.

@mikelee7318 Iraq's IADS system was French designed and built. Kari. It's "Irak" backwards. They had both Soviet SAMs and Western equipment like the Roland system and MIM-23 Hawk batteries they captured from Kuwait.

@sidharthcs2110 You can't see insects on radar. Mach 1 or 5 mph, even a solid steel insect wouldn't give enough radar return to be detected. So no, you don't see insects on radar zipping at Mach speeds. You just don't see anything.

@djape1977 No, it wasn't. It was an 8 mile shot against an unaware target.

@djape1977 If you had any idea what stealth is you'd understand how you have no point. Radar works with the inverse square law. This means that distance reduces radar signal by a massive degree. Stealth takes advantage of this by reducing returns, which creates a scenario where the reverse square law reduces returns into nothing. With just 8 miles from the SAM site to the path of the F-117, the reverse square law didn't reduce the radar returns enough.

With MLU, though.

@vladimirfromukraine419 What push? It can't use the avionics, it can't loiter. It could only maybe lob JDAMs, which other aircraft can do.

They don't want them. They already have Su-25s.
1
@DollyRanch Who does Wiki quote as a source, by the way?
1
They have Su-25s. They don't need a slower aircraft that's just going to get pilots killed.

@isodoublet You do realize that wavelength has an influence on the beam angular resolution, right? That means that at some distance, you'll have enough uncertainty about the detected aircraft that launching a missile at it can cause you to miss entirely.

@zenithplyrzreg6405 WWI didn't have a drone operator telling you where the enemies are. WWI was men going over the wire, getting chewed up, infiltrating trenches. This war has IFVs rushing in, dumping troops out the back, then trench clearing looks more like modern CQB fighting rather than WWI bayonets, pistols and clubs.

The Dutch want blood after their citizens were murdered by Russia in the MH17 shootdown. Do not underestimate a grudge. They might not show up to the Hague for their trial, but the Dutch will be satisfied with making other Russians pay in blood.
