@sapphicdisaster8390 they weren't in the process of surrendering, they were literally having a meeting where they gambled on the US having a single bomb and not enough uranium to make a second one the day Nagasaki was struck.

@sapphicdisaster8390 Do you know how many people were dying in the Pacific theater for every day that Japan did not surrender? Just asking to know if you know.

Harry S. Truman: "Two cities flattened, and you think that of yourself? No. I am the one who nukes."

@sovietmoose5624 Conventionally bombing Japan would have taken time. Japan's mentality was that they could weather the attacks and simply wait out the Americans. A single plane with a single bomb leveling an entire city in a single attack changed the entire calculus. Hell, after Hiroshima they were actually considering that the US couldn't possibly have enough uranium to build a second one, unaware that the US also developed the plutonium implosion bomb. It was the second bomb that made them see the US as an unstoppable foe who would not be deterred.

Most of their toxicity is from the fact that impacts cause part of the uranium to turn to dust, and uranium is a heavy metal. So basically it's like an indoor shooting range without ventilation (air full of lead dust).

The Tsar Bomba was 57 megaton. Most warheads in ground and naval launch use by the US top off at around 475 kiloton. You're not gonna get a greater chance of fire from nukes smaller than we already detonated before.

It's called Trinitite and many took pieces as a souvenir.

You do light off a fission nuke to initiate a fusion weapon.
