@killswitchuncaged2158 the M4 was never made by Armalite, it was 100% developed by Colt and they still own the TDP.

@DaleDixieMafia "Tldr Colts only contribution to the rifle was the forward assist" - but that's not true, though. After the design was sold to Colt, they kept playing around with the design. They did the long-stroke piston with the Colt Model 703, much later they did the Type C SCAR in short-stroke, they did the 605 carbines and the 607 "submachine gun", they did the 609/610/629/649 "commando" versions, etc. They even did a line of automatic rifle/light support weapon versions and the Colt 9mm SMG. At one point the shortcomings of the commando versions forced the military to accept it as a "submachine gun" even though it doesn't fire a pistol round, so the XM4 project began as a way of combining the old XM177s with the M16A2. Not only was the M4 design a product of Colt's R&D, it is itself a derivative work from previous Colt R&D. The claim that Colt did nothing but add a forward assist is false, and pretty much unrelated to the topic considering that the M4 came into the picture much later than the early days of AR-15 adoption trials.
