@Jornandreja "We can't even figure out how to safely store the waste we've already produced." - we already know but regulations prevent it! "can't be safely moved." - yes, it can. There are coffins made to move nuclear waste specifically designed to safely transport it. "Solar" - doesn't work at night, weak during winters and in higher latitudes. "wind" - whacks birds to death, causes changes to climate in certain areas by taking energy out of natural winds "geothermal" - can only be done in specific types of rock and has the same problems as fracking "hydro" - you can't build dams everywhere, you're disrupting natural water cycles and even fish reproduction as they need to move upstream

@jgonzalez20 two words: Banqiao Dam One hydroelectric accident killed more people than Fukushima and Chernobyl put together.

@akashsharda9993 "america is the country that world looks up to" - nah "if that happens than all these countries are forced to take actions" - no, they won't. Unless you go and personally start bombing them into submission countries can't be forced to do anything.

@Oli okay and what happens when we all spent our money? We won't be able to afford food. What happens to the farmer when he can't sell food? I'm massively oversimplifying the issue because obviously the money has to go SOMEWHERE but I'm only pointing out that the lives we save by restraining the climate shouldn't be thrown away by killing them with poverty. This has to be done intelligently, not haphazardly.

@lucasthemycologist "Requires a shitload of energy to extract and refine the radioactive ore" - yeah and where do you get the stuff that goes into solar panels and batteries? Yeah you're gonna have to dig those out of the ground. "generates a bunch waste" - which can be put into concrete vaults underground away from fault lines.

But you see the problem, if you tax oil too much you make renewable more expensive because we need oil to get to the minerals that make the electrical components and to run the factories making the solar panels.

lmao so a project that costs trillions will be paid off by cutting... billions?

@jasonr6342 >nuclear kills everyone on the planet >dozens of reactors running for decades :thinking emoji:

@jasonr6342 yeah it's not like we haven't come up with passive safeties in the last few decades or anything.

@drewwreds6934 Chicago wasn't the size it was today and the liftings were done pieacemeal.

The thing is, the green energies also get subsidies. Geothermal can't be done anywhere because it requires specific geological conditions, wind whacks birds to death, solar obviously doesn't work at night and is weak during winters/at high latitudes. We can't just build dams willy nilly because of the ecological impact of changing the hydrogeology of entire areas. Fossil fuels need to have their subsidies cut but if there's any hope to make things green I don't think you can remove it from nuclear or the green alternatives as they get more research and development.

@hegaliandialectics4289 that's the opposite of what I heard, arctic is growing and greenland is shrinking
