@easlern I literally live in Europe and my government is left wing even though the center-right party "won" the election. The left just joined the center-left party and pooling their seats together they can form a government.

Yeah but that's really complex. If I ask you for a moderate belief on gun control for example, I am sure I would disagree and be able to explain why your example of "moderate" is actually pretty radical and unreasonable. Or alternatively, look at the 4th Amendment. Both parties have a "moderate" opinion on cybersecurity which is that you can't have both security and privacy so we compromise. But to me, accepting any form of warrantless wiretapping is an extremist position even if you are a moderate. It's binary. My position is on the other extreme, absolutely no wiretapping without due process.

Funny how consistent it is. I always heard it was found that in general conservatives think liberals are "misinformed" or "misguided", but liberals flat out hate conservatives. And no matter what I keep seeing people reinforcing this observation through the years.

The problem is the left/right just forming a coalition to win control of the government even when they don't have enough votes as an individual party and you're back to the two party system.

@parkerbilbro3651 America definitely doesn't need a economically left wing party. Not only would they deliver an easy win to the Republican party by fragmenting the Democratic vote, but true left politics would divide the country even further. Maybe this may come as a shock to you, but the average democrat does not identify with leftist economics not social policies.

More parties would still end up as a two party system, because the left or the right would form coalitions.

Kanaka Maoli Democrats more centrist? They've been economically neoliberal for some time now and you cannot definitely expect an economically left party to succeed in the American system but they are definitely not "centrist". In fact they are losing support from centrist Democrats.
2
@mintedog "the democratic party would be centre-right" yeah when the democratic establishment is essentially calling for political violence and demanding people to be considered guilty until proven innocent there is nothing centrist about your leanings.

@mintedog "unprecedented global peace present today" - simply because war became so expensive the big guys cannot afford to engage each other in open warfare - since the Cold War you've seen the rise of the proxy war and foreign meddling. I am thankful for the relative peace we live in today but we live in the days Saudi Arabia can just torture and kill a journalist with near impunity while committing war crimes on Yemen most people don't even know about with arms supplied by Europe, Canada and the US. A president can receive the Nobel Peace Prize while bombing 7 countries. "soaring standards of living" - but even the left claims wages aren't keeping up with inflation, what's up with that? "increasing personal freedoms in most parts of the world" - except that we're under more and more control from the megacorporations, we're being listened to at all times and the media can essentially block you from seeing content they don't want you to see in an instant, and even Google is working with the Chinese government

@ScytheNoire "Socialism is what saved America after the Great Depression" - false, in fact the New Deal made the depression last longer than it did "You also sound like quite the racist, how dare black kids go to the same school as white children" - you literally lack reading comprehension. He said that Kennedy had to use force because of the democrats blocking him

@Tombee2 socialism is the same as communism but with a state. In socialism private property is abolished and the control is put in the hands of the communist party. Unions aren't inherently socialist, it's workers using negotiation powers by holding all the cards in their hand. Capitalism also doesn't defend the abolition of public facilities, it's an economic system not a totalitarian regime.
1
@Tombee2 that's not the definition of socialism. In any corporation people work together for a common goal and that doesn't make them socialist. Having power over someone (withholding production capacity, which threatens business) and using it as leverage in a negotiation is pretty capitalist. "Not to mention socialism in an umbrella term" - yeah but the umbrella isn't far reaching enough to say that people getting together is socialism, or that me sharing my food is socialism, etc. Socialism may be an umbrella term but it is very well defined and you can't shove anything underneath it. "Using communism an extreme left wing idea isnt fair for the term socialism because it can be pro-market" 1) it is VERY fair, look up the history of socialism; 2) pro-market socialism is still anti-capitalist "Also capitalism isnt the best direction as seen through the industrial ear" - the industrial era made people have enough power to demand the vote, abolish child labour, etc. Before the industrial era you had no choice. "we need a mix of both socialistic practices as well as capitalism" - that makes no sense. Socialist practices contradict capitalism and vice-versa. The abolition of private property is against capitalism, even if the system is based on market-socialism. And if you allow capitalism within a socialist system people will undermine the system. "If we have pure capitalsim then the rich will rule over the poor" - the rich ruling over the poor exists in literally every system. Even in anarchism, the lack of a governing system, the rich will have more choice and control over those who have less. "if we have communism greedy government officials will rule" - communism is supposed to be stateless

@fritzjackson4336 this is a phenomenon that is just too consistent to ignore. Typical conservatives think liberals are just misguided or misinformed, while liberals think conservatives are malevolent, stupid, etc.
