Not true. The USAF thought the Army was satisfied with CAS until it ran a study by asking the troops directly. The USAF discovered the Army was purposefully telling officers to not call in CAS so that rotary wing apologists could get funding for attack helicopters. The USAF then started the A-X program for the Army's sake and was even criticized by govt spending watchdogs for buying 700 of them. They only tried to retire it after it was stagnant in keeping up with the times.

The airframes are 41 years old. They can't go on much longer.

The F35 can fly in thunderstorms but an issue with the on board inert gas generator lead to a moratorium on flying in thunderstorms because they don't want to risk the 0.5% chance a lighting causes a fuel tank to catch fire. The supersonic restriction is only during peacetime, it's not seen in the F35A, only happened at very high altitude and when they tried to replicate the issue to figure out the cause they couldn't make it happen again. So a choice was made to not try and fix it because a different coating upgrade will probably be made in the meantime.

Hogwash. The USAF was criticized by the GAO for buying too many A10s (around 700 airframes).

This is rubbish. Both sides have Su-25s. They use them by getting within a few miles of the frontline, pitching up, firing rockets and turning tail and running. The significant air power development is glide bombs which need a Su-34 to drop from altitude. Su-25s flying over the foe just get added to the shootdown compilations.

@wc3478 the Cheyenne was cancelled because it was delayed for so long Lockheed was still trying to figure out how to solve analog control problems by the time digital controls were getting introduced. Also LBJ had links to Bell helicopter. The courts determined the Cheyenne, A-10 and Harrier could coexist. So drop the conspiracy.

The Phantom did well in Israeli service...

It was called Viper because of Battlestar Galactica. Not 10 years ago. Also many aircraft have a nickname. Thunderbolt II is the "Warthog". The Strike Eagle is the "Mudhen". The Super Hornet is the "Rhino". No name change occurs. The manufacturer gives them an official name for the brochure. The pilots call it whatever they want.

This doesn't make any sense. The titanium bath tub only exists because in an A-10 the pilot is a gunfire magnet. When flying in a plane that doesn't get hit in the first place you don't need one.
1
The A-10 is reliant on pods too. Whenever A-10 pilots rely on visual alone they hit friendlies. There's a reason that CAS doctrine assigns weapons release authority to the JTAC on the ground. When a pilot flies over, the JTAC holds him by his hand to guide him, and A-10s are not exempt from the rules.

@rogerjohnson6676 beast mode is the name for the external ordance kit, bro keep up

Not what happened. Also the Army legally can't take it the same way the air force can't ask funding for aircraft carriers.

@velimirkolundzija4451 the S-500 is an anti-ballistic system, not anti-aircraft. Stop watching youtube text to speech military channels.
1
@velimirkolundzija4451 the S-500 is just an upgraded S-300V system. You can look up, it's the style of conical missile used for ABM, like the S-300V had.
1
The A-10 needs two engines because you know it will get hit. In the air not getting hit in the first place is better.

@jasonfabo7126 if you ask them you get different answers. I've had several Marines say the Navy Hornets were their favorite CAS.

@danielescobar7618 B-52s have been retired up to the G variant when the Cold War ended, leaving only the Hs. So it's not a bunch of early B-52s still flying around.

Not true. The USAF originated from the USAAF and inherited the Army doctrine of picking the weapon for the most demanding task and then using it across the board. Strategic bombing, interception and deep interdiction were the most demanding roles which required jets. It was a problem introduced by the Army's own books on how to do things.

More like, Congress won't let us retire the A-10 unless we come up with an A designation plane so let's give them the stupid A plane and just use the F-16 anyway.
