Has ArmchairWarlord returned? I need to read his cope takes on this.

Fixed wing pilots CANNOT perform close air support without a qualified forward controller on the ground. Whenever A-10 pilots are let loose without a controller they hit friendlies. You can't tell which side people are on even from a low and slow A-10.
3
Nobody wants to risk it because changing borders based on ethnic/sectarian concerns would open the precedent to carve up the other Arab states.

The A-10 is almost as expensive as a fighter jet after all the upgrades.

@wino99999 This is Vietnam era stuff. As of today the A-10 and 4th gen fighter jets use the same targeting pods to look at the ground. And doctrinally no pilot can perform weapons release during CAS without the JTAC/FAC on the ground authorizing. Because even A-10 pilots flying low and slow have struck friendlies after identifying them as enemies.
2
They're upgraded to fight the global war on terrorism so their features are based around flying over the enemy with impunity. Without the targeting pods, it's worse than the Su-25.

You don't have to fly low since the 1990s. In fact it is not recommended. 7 A-10s/OA-10 were lost in Desert Storm.

Get in the "who must go?" comments while you can.
1
Because they can only retire A-10s with Congress approval.

The problem is this is a fantasy. Suppression stops working once the wild weasels go away, and small threats like MANPADS can't be suppressed. The close only means troops are in close contact with the enemy. I'm 99% sure a B-52 once provided CAS via JDAM across a border.

There's no such thing as a tank in the sky due to gravity. Aircraft are as light as possible.
1
It was a suicide mission. It was known A-10 pilots would not survive past 2 weeks and their mission was to delay Soviet forces to let the American ships cross the Atlantic and land in Europe.
1
The SkyWarden program is to give support to spec ops in places like Africa where USAF/USN can't respond in time. It's not an A-10 replacement.
1
@Raivo_K A-10 flight hours numbers are artificially lowered by not counting the 2 billion contract for Boeing to remake the wings and other contracts for rare spare parts. The company that made A-10 closed in 2003.
1
Can't loiter in a real war. It's one pass and haul ass.
1
The Army has already stated they don't care if the ordnance is dropped by B-52 or carrier pigeon. The A-10 is a Congressional drama they no longer want to be part of.
1
Ships float. Aircraft fall from the sky. Big difference.
1
@wino99999 If comms are poor then they can't drop weapons. Or else stuff like the AC-130 attack on the Doctors Without Borders hospital happens.

@gilliesiut2332 Low and slow doesn't do anything. The targeting is done via optics and GPS coordinates. Relying on physiological effects that just send the enemy running so that he can fight you again is precisely the broken logic that leads to insurgencies running rings around conventional forces. Fighter jets have done shows of force. What do you think happens when a jet kicks the afterburner and does a supersonic shock wave? If you want people to back off without turning them to paste, you don't use the cannon.

A-10s are crammed full of upgrades. They're almost F-35 levels of cost. Plus the pilot is more valuable.
