@Shadow-n1c4l The bolts you get at the store for 99 cents were not rated to work on aircraft. The military REQUIRES a lot of source controls and certifications before parts can be used. The costs are driven by the military's own standards. If the military wanted to, they could easily ask the government to write laws that let them buy Lowe's bolts without breaching the contract.

@JayEy "how many can you lose" my brother in Christ the US has more F-35s than other countries have fighter jets in total.

@JayEy Lesser stealth B-1s bombed Syria with impunity as retaliation against gas attacks, and they were defended by Syrian S-300s and Russian S-400s. If B-1s can get within range to drop payload, and the defenses can't intercept the incoming munitions, what makes you think the F-35 would be worse?

@140theguy Funnily enough the F-15C always had an air to ground mode from the factory, just disabled. The Israelis were the first to use the "hidden" F-15 ground attack feature.

Imagine a world where the YF-23 and X-32 won and everyone would be making youtube videos on how the F-22 and 35 should have won.

@eldersilva9030 It has an internal bay, it just can't be pressurized because of panel gaps.

@allenjones4160 nobody avoids it - F-35 readiness rates are perfectly normal. You just lack context.

The issue is that for example in the 70s the USAF purchased a hundred and something F-15As and retired them 5 years later to buy F-15Cs, with the As being given to the national guard. People think the C variant is how the F-15 started as. The F-35 openly entered the service unfinished and was allowed to have hundred and something early variants upgraded to Block 3. People don't remember or don't understand the trickery involved with previous aircraft. The F-35s major issue is honesty.

What failures? The F-4 was ambushed while escorting bombing runs, not the aircraft's fault. When Phantoms went hunting for MiGs they wrecked the NV air force to bits.

Footage is downgraded. There was a trade show where they had a TV linked to a F-35 flying near Las Vegas and the footage looked like someone was standing in a hotel rooftop with binoculars.

You have no idea how many programs cost trillions. The F-35 was the first to be judged by this metric. Nobody ever estimated the cost of fielding >2000 airframes for 60 years.

I recently read that the latest Osprey crash was due to the crew ignoring three magnetic particle detector warnings. The gearbox was fighting for dear life and the pilot could have saved it by diverting and landing after the second warning.

What the hell does that mean? Russia has had trouble with 30 year old American weapons.

Also nobody included the last page of the report where the pilot flying the F-35 said he believed the software behind controls could be "let loose" and allow him to turn the F-35 harder. Basically asking to turn off the steering assist because he believes the prototype is ready to drift around corners.

The Gripen E is as expensive. Even the Gripen C was more expensive to operate than the F-16 despite much lower performance. You think Sweden won't cut you off? First, Sweden's Gripen exports have to be cleared by everyone making the parts. That means Britain, Germany, US, etc. Second, if Sweden doesn't agree with your fight you're not gonna get parts and replacement units. So you have to be aligned with Sweden as well.

Hey Connor mind coming back?

That's splitting hairs. If you look at any other fighter aircraft the numbers will be the same. But they just use "operational" and "non-operational". On the F-35 you have fully operational, partially operational and non-operational. That splits the operational numbers into two categories, making it look bad.

Russia blasted so many empty fields with Soviet style doctrine that they needed North Korean ammo. And Russians complain their ammo isn't very good.
