  1. There were two missiles involved. Most likely a Russian missile was knocked off course by an Ukrainian S-300 which caused the large crater and the wreckage of S-300 parts. The story with the two missiles was dropped because NATO didn't want Poland to activate Article 5 on Russia.

If the weapon does not have a thick penetrating case to survive the impact, the warhead will be crushed and detonated too early.
