@theboiofallbois "The A10 can fly so low and slow that it's hard for radar missiles to hit it" - This was true before look down shoot down radar. Now radar uses Doppler shift filtering to detect the differences between the ground and aircraft. Not to mention that the turbine blades are huge radar reflectors from the front. "Once the other aircraft overshoots or the A10" - Why would it overshoot? If you go vertical, the A-10 doesn't have the thrust to keep up.

@kemarlyjohnson2918 "Terrain masking makes A-10 immune to radar detection at long ranges" - Not from airborne radar. Terrain masks you from ground based radars. "BVR missiles are useless on small low flying aircraft" - Missiles have been used against Cessnas in air interdiction.

@scgrigsby How is that related? F-16s, F-15Es, F/A-18s, etc combined do more close air support than the A-10. In fact, the F-16 alone already does more CAS than the A-10.

It's not armored like a tank. It has some degree of armor that prevents it from being totally taken out by certain types of damage. A gun burst or a missile is able to slice an aircraft apart in one hit. You can't put enough armor on an aircraft to defend it from such a direct strike and still be able to take off.

@buster8277 "What cost less ... bullets or bomb?" - The bullet, if delivering it requires an aircraft to go in a predictable straight dive that makes it easy to shoot down. "What can be used in danger close from 10 miles out? a-10 gun." - False. The gun can't hit targets at 10 miles.

@buster8277 No, you can't. You can have one and a half A-10s. You're using 1970s dollars and the price of a very inferior aircraft that lacks all the upgrades.

@buster8277 Nice deflection. You claimed that A-10s cost 2.3 million. The wings ALONE cost 10 million. By definition, the entire rest of the aircraft including engines and avionics has to cost more than 10 million. So at the bare minimum, you're lying about the A-10's cost by a factor of 10. We don't have the lifetime cost of other aircraft so we can't make that comparison easily. "The A-10 costs between $19,000 and $20,000 per hour to fly. Welsh said he would like to see an aircraft that cost between $4,000 to $5,000 per hour" - The Super Tucano costs $1,000 per hour. It was the contender for the OA-X program that they cancelled. Not my problem they decided to turn down cheap options and now are complaining about costs. "Earlier this year, Lt. Gen. A-10 cost about 10% of an f-35?" - What the hell does that even mean? Lt. Gen who? 10% of what? Flying costs? Unit costs? "Besides I was talking about cas" - So was I.

The third picture doesn't seem like bullet holes, they're extremely even in spacing and small in diameter which doesn't seem consistent with an autocannon. It seems like all the holes were punctured at the same time, possibly from either an AA shell with proximity fuse or a missile. The pilot that was flying the aircraft also only heard one bang.

@adamboylan2307 The USAF actually proposed to retire almost 50 of them but it will probably be rejected. Since 2014 that the A-10 only does 11% of CAS while the F-16 does 33%. It's been replaced already, it's just Congress that refuses to let it happen.

@robstone4537 Not just that, but F-4s were at a disadvantage because the Air Force had to travel through areas where they had no ground radar coverage while North Vietnam could see them coming with plenty of time to react. So they sent the MiGs around the border and came in from behind. Many times these F-4s were flying slow to escort strike packages so the MiGs did high speed passes to attack and fled before the Phantoms could speed up and give chase. The Navy Phantoms always had their ships giving them radar coverage from behind so they didn't have this problem. The USAF Phantoms that went out to look for MiGs didn't have this disadvantage either.

The gun wasn't effective against tanks.

Not ready to fight. Most of the aircraft damaged to that extent were written off. The A-10s that got repaired and got back into fighting only had external panel damage that could be patched up in a short time frame. Unfortunately one pilot got killed trying to land a damaged A-10 in Desert Storm.

@buster8277 "A-10 is made to protect soldiers on the ground" - It's also made really easy to get shot down. "F-35 cost 3.5 billion" - Under 80 million flyaway cost for the F-35A. "A-10 2.3 million with upgrades" - FALSE. Adjusted for inflation a modern A-10 is anywhere between 40-60 million dollars. And the recent Boeing contracts for new wings put a cost of 2 billion on 200-something wings for the entire fleet. This means almost 10 million dollars for the wings alone. Just the wings cost 4x more than your claimed cost.

@adamboylan2307 There's no A-10s in production. The last one to come off the assembly line did it in 1984 and the company went out of business in 2003.
