@nexpro6118 Do you hear that Mr Anderson? It's the sound of inevitability. The USAF asked for A-10s to be retired every year. Congress is starting to fold. The less aircraft in inventory, the harder it is to keep the remaining ones.

@pauljs75 The A-10 is extremely slow. A Super Tucano can almost match the A-10 cruise speed.
3
@nexpro6118 Yet the winning strategy seems to just make aircraft capable of handling all tasks instead of an aircraft that can't fly on its own and needs to be treated like a baby.
3
@briandix4633 A pilot lost his life trying to land a damaged A-10. Everyone remembers "KC" Campbell for her success, but Lt. Patrick Olson is forgotten.

Cheyennes had control issues that took so long to fix, mechanical controls were starting to get replaced by digital controls. Imagine having to design a mechanical thingamajig that responds to the Cheyenne's idiosyncrasies and something like 7 years fine tuning it, for the rest of the aviation industry to just say "now we just tell the computer to handle it!". It was in development hell.

@knowahnosenothing4862 All that drone tech is on A-10C aircraft too.
2
Time on station means little when the enemy has a vote. You can't loiter over a modern battle. It's one pass, haul ass. If you want time on station, bring a Super Tucano.
2
Didn't happen. An old wives tale. One Army general spitballed that idea and other Army officers explained to him it couldn't be done. The US Army brass never officially asked to operate the A-10 nor could they.
2
The F-16 did 12,000 sorties with only 3 losses.
2
@gee-o8e It's already been replaced. Only 11% of CAS missions have been done by the A-10 since 2014.
2
How are the Marines gonna fly it off a short deck carrier? The amphibious assault ship requires STOVL aircraft like the Harrier or F-35B as it has no catapult or arresting wires.
2
Morale boosters work both ways. Now imagine US troops witnessing an A-10 being shot down. Morale would collapse.
1
Because it's >40 years old. Aircraft aren't built like classic cars. They have to take off, which means being light. That means the materials bend and fatigue due to forces.
1
WRONG. The USAF ordered 750 of the damned things, and GAO slammed the USAF for buying so many A-10s with no justification for such a high number of aircraft of the type. Liars accused the USAF of loving the A-10 too much, then liars switched their tune to say the USAF hated it from the beginning.
1
Marines can't fly them off short deck carriers, Army can't afford to spend billions to adopt aircraft that will need to be retired immediately. They're over 40 years old.
1
The Sky Warsen is not meant for modern combat. It's something you fly in Africa to overwatch SOCOM guys and not let them fall into ambushes like that famous one.
1
700 jets weren't in Germany. A deployment can't have the entire fleet overseas.
1
The Cheyenne was stopped by itself. It was plagued with control issues which made it dangerous to fly.
1
And Lt. Patrick Olson? Does he deserve to be ignored?
1
@EvLSpectre the sturdy frame is 40 years old, running out of flight hours
1
@TheStig_TG The Cheyenne had issues that took almost a decade to fix.
1
It is. Speed is life and altitude is insurance. The purpose of the A-10 was brute forcing warheads onto foreheads back when you couldn't guide them. You had to go low and slow because otherwise unguided weapons would miss.
1
Is Lt. Patrick Olson thankful? He got posthumous promotion to Cpt. after trying to land a damaged A-10.
1
Define built for CAS use.
1
Now the entire center of gravity and fuel consumption has changed. You'll have to redesign it again. And then redsign it to address the issues caused by the redesign.
1
Nobody's making modern A-10 analogues. No aircraft manufacturers are proposing it and no country is issuing contracts for such types of aircraft. That's a hint.
1
@knowahnosenothing4862 They wouldn't, the engines would need to bave a similar size and weight. Aircraft are very sensitive to changes in center of mass.
1
Lt. Patrick Olson made it back on an A-10 and he still lost his life. Amazing how A-10 fanboys always remember Campbell but make sure nobody knows about Olson trusting the A-10 to bring him back. He should have ejected but the plane's reputation kįlled him. And you people NEVER say his name because it counters the narrative around "KC" Campbell.
