Not everyone. Some pilots complained the gun required the use of a smaller radar and negatively affected handling characteristics due to the extra weight up front.

@PvtPartzz That's a bad argumentative tactic. Nobody ever says they'd like to have less ammunition in a fight, but the problem is that a guns kill is a one in a lifetime opportunity, very unlikely to present itself, and if you're not well trained in air to air gunnery it's completely wasted on you. So instead of asking would they prefer to have no gun, ask: was the tradeoff worth it?

@luigimrlgaming9484 Not true. The AIM 9X is not like old missiles. It "sees" the aircraft. Clean flares, dirty flares, it just sees the object with cockpit and wings. The missile just failed to track.
7
@dirkbastiaandejong997 The flares story was not corroborated by the pilots.

F-4s got electro optical systems to identify tracks visually outside visual range. Too late for Vietnam. The F-14 got TISEO. The F-35 had the EOTS/DAS. You can see visually beyond visual range. Lenses and cameras do wonders.
4
Navy F-4s with no guns were scoring better than USAF.
3
It was a follow up of the Indochina War, which resulted in France leaving. The Vietnamese were split between the North, aligned with the Soviet Union, and the South, aligned with the West. The US was following a policy of "containment" to fight the spread of communism so it backed the South Vietnamese government against Northern invasion.
3
If you're spent, RTB. Don't bring a gun to a missile fight.
3
@wisenber IRST and electrooptical systems like the one in the F-35 give you "visual range" beyond visual range.
3
@furkadurka Actually, I'm pointing out there's no correlation. If good K:D ratios are scored without guns, that means you can't draw a correlation between guns and higher K:D ratios.

The AIM-9X failed the first combat firing which is understandable, the balloons are "cold" targets that were tracked by just imaging seeker. Not the hot exhaust of an aircraft.
2
The drone has a high aspect ratio for efficient loitering. It's not going to jink to evade crazy Ivan.
2
The merge is just a jousting match where both sides take an all aspect missile through the cockpit.
2
How do you put a mechanical linkage when the guns are electric or hydraulic driven?
2
@Battlestargroup How do you make a gun that weighs several thousand pounds work by pulley? The electrical connection will always be necessary due to the MASTER ARM switch and if required weight on wheels sensors. Preventing the gun from going off and shooting other parked aircraft or crews is more important that whatever that fever dream is.
2
@Battlestargroup Artillery pieces have a mechanism to fire the initiating charge. Aircraft cannons are electrically primed. It wouldn't work. Simple as that. Artillery pieces also need to open the breach and reinsert a round. Rotary cannons in aircraft have to spin meaning there's no way you can link a pull cord. Simple as that. Artillery isn't an autocannon. Simple as that.
2
Nope. Sensors in the visual and thermal spectrum will still beat the naked eye.
2
They didn't put a gun in the F-4 because it was a naval interceptor meant to protect the carrier group. If it had to chase the enemy carrying anti ship missiles witha gun; it would have to be ditched at sea because the carrier would be in the bottom of the ocean.
2
@Rimasta1 The missile failed.
2
@nexpro6118 This issue has been raised by online commentators for decades. The issue is, IRST and modern missiles still mean there's not much room for traditional dogfights.
2
@luigimrlgaming9484 It didn't pop flares. It just failed to track. The pilot who took the shot made no mention of flares.
1
It's not deflection. When the issues were fixed, the USAF increased their kill rate to 14:1.
1
They had a better Sidewinder than the USAF. But their Sparrows were poorly maintained until the reports came in and started to address the issue.
1
You can visually identify beyond visual range thanks to electro-optical systems.
1
@nicolaeionescu6538 Can't jam the visual spectrum.
1
@wisenber It does.
1
@luigimrlgaming9484 Old missiles received infrared as an impulse. They tracked this impulse, which caused them to seek flares. AIM-9Xs don't see impulses, they see objects. Like FLIR.
