Is the 22% peak efficiency? Because I can see how a fixed panel will not operate at peak efficiency during all hours of daylight.

"The columns that support the wind mills can be made from stone" - Too heavy. There's a reason skyscrapers aren't made of stone. "These should be designed by governments" - Governments are inherently garbage at producing anything.

@daguard411 "The devices aren't meant to be portable," - Actually, they are. They have to be shipped to location and assembled. "so weight doesn't matter" - Weight of any construction does matter. Please don't try to argue against basic engineering. "The final line of your comment is only true when it is allowed to happen." - Governments allow themselves to allow it to happen. Since when does the government ask you permission?

@daguard411 "Well, they don't have to be portable all of the time." - But they have to be portable when being built at factories, transported and assembled, which are critical phases of a final product's lifetime. You can't just think of the finished product, you have to think of every single step. For example the auxiliary solid rockets for the Space Shuttle were supposed to have a larger diameter because that's what the designers figured was the optimal size. But they were made smaller because they had to fit through a tunnel when transported by train. You have to think of the whole picture and how things fit together, not think of the static object. "As for governments asking all of us for permission, I think those are called elections." - Sure. After you give "permission" through voting, is the government going to ask you for input on how to design wind turbines. No, you'll have a few years of them doing whatever they want and then when those years are up your choice will be to let a party you hate win or vote again for the people you gave "permission" to all those years ago. If voting did anything they'd have made it illegal. Stop fooling yourself and thinking you're given importance and power of decision for filling out a ballot.

"How can burning forests to produce electricity be cleaner than natural gas." - Forests are part of a cycle (as long as you replant) and natural gas is essentially plants that got trapped millions of years ago and didn't fully decompose. When burning a forest you're adding CO2 that gets absorbed by the newer trees, when you burn natural gas you're adding CO2 that didn't exist before to the atmosphere. The thing is, I don't trust the fuel suppliers' promises that the replanting is being done properly. A lot of things can go wrong and we should be planting more, not cutting down.

Is 23% peak efficiency? I could see how a fixed angle panel would have an 8% efficiency through the entire day (daylight).

It's not a scam at the individual level but it is one at the government level. Also, do your calculations include any subsidies? Would you still get the 30% interest on investment if you had to pay the real market price for panels and installation?

But that's fine. I like the idea of solar for energy independence. I don't like the idea of huge solar farms anywhere that isn't a desert.
