  1. The A-10 by the way is the biggest fixed-wing user of APKWS. The cost of Hellfires from helicopters or Mavericks from fixed wing is pretty steep, so guidance kits for rockets provide a middle ground.

  2.  @tracycampbell1055  The F-4 didn't need a gun. The US Navy didn't need it, the USMC only used gun pods for ground strafing, and something like 90 percent of kills by USAF Phantoms were by missile. The gun myth is History Channel fuddlore.

  3.  @Joesolo13  That is not true. The A-10 flew around 8,000 sorties, the F-16 flew 13,340.

  4. But pilot interviews from the time show that they did watch the tank to see if it caught fire, because if not they had to do a second pass. With missiles a single hit obliterated them and they didn't need to circle around to do BDA.

  5.  @freddyd1783  That A-10 cost to build is completely outdated. It's a 15-18 million dollar aircraft, but in 1970-1980 dollars. Adjust for inflation, please.
