There's no two-seat F-35. The Hornet scenes had cameras in the rear seat while a real pilot flew in the front. On a F-35 even if there were cameras, an actor couldn't fly it.

The F-22 has very limited air to ground capabilities, only being able to drop GPS guided JDAMs. The plot states that GPS is being jammed in the area.

Not true. Paramount asked for a Navy consultant to supervise the work and they spent a lot of time crafting the story. It's unrealistic because it needs to be a movie and because the Navy imposed some restrictions on the information that could be disseminated. The Fighter Pilot Podcast has an episode where they interview the consultant and he had a lot of fun doing the movie, he even appeared in a cameo.

I mean, perfectly credible. Some dictator wastes money on three shiny new fighters, most of the nation's defenses are decades old.

@CoffeeMatt10 RWR does not warn of a missile shot if fired with the radar in track-while-scan mode. It only warns when the missile goes active, which is just a few miles away and seconds from impact.

@joeclaridy Enrichment facilities is the most complicated part of proliferation. This could be a decades long setback if the PhDs and engineers responsible for the plant were inside when it was struck. It would also have to be located in a new site that would be easier to attack as the "secret" facility in the impenetrable mountain collapsed.

@sergarlantyrell7847 Because the aircraft in the air were patrolling for attacks against the airbase. If they had attacked the SAMs the aircraft would know the target was the enrichment facility and go there.
1
@sergarlantyrell7847 Yes, that's right. That was the reason for the time limit. I guess the attack on the defenses would tell the fighters to look in the trench because they were travelling west when looking for targets, rather than south.

@fredwerza3478 That quote was by a guy who stole it from The Godfather movies. He made it up.

@fredwerza3478 Whatever you want to believe.

The original Star Wars used the plot from 633 Squadron and The Dam Busters.

@pogo1140 I think it's funny this was somewhat addressed in the movie Stealth. When they use dispensables they say "releasing chaff and flares" (or "chaffing flares" although that sounds dumb).

The 5th gen aircraft were shot down because they were caught by surprise. The first that got raked by a gun was not expecting it while they were interrogating the F-14A, the third was shot down by an unseen Hangman. In air combat most losses are from pilots not expecting to be hit. Not fair fights.
1
@daiwizzy I didn't tag anyone so the response is to the OP. The third one is movie magic, it's difficult to show the tension from getting yeeted from 15 miles out so they put the Su-57 right behind it and with no chance of missing.

@pashapasovski5860 "Stealth is a myth" Russia and China develop stealth

@pashapasovski5860 F-15EX is corporate welfare for Boeing.

@CoffeeMatt10 Stealth also includes heat. The F-117 has flat exhaust to reduce engine heat signature. Same as the F-22. The F-35 heat reduction is even more advanced. Noise cannot be used to guide a weapon in air combat. The naked eye can't shoot. The F-35 has LPI radar. It mixes frequencies so make it look like all the radio communications in the sky. The air is full of radio waves. By mixing radar emissions it's very difficult to detect the F-35 radar. It's a needle in a haystack. Also, you can have other aircraft and AWACS feed the F-35 with radar information so that it doesn't have to turn it on. Stealth has not been negated. It's used not just in reconnaissance but also strike. It's not a novelty - China, Russia and Europe are all developing stealth. There's no dogfights anymore, just exercises and shows of force (like Greece vs Turkey). If pilots are in for a real fight, they fire missiles. In a dogfight you die for no reason. Supermaneuverability is nonsense. Supermaneuverability is control of the aircraft post-stall. If you stall your aircraft in the air during combat, you're dead. You can't run away from a missile when you lost almost all velocity. "Let's see you try to shoot me?" Okay. Shoot a missile, the plane stopped in the middle of the air explodes. Good job.

@ЕвгенийБелошицкий-г4я The Soviet Union lost in Afghanistan too, sit down.
1
@leandrocerneira The US suffered two losses in the movie. Rooster and Maverick. Typical Z-boy, God wasted a brain on you.
1
@ЕвгенийБелошицкий-г4я Not true. The Taliban were a group who formed in Pakistan/Afghanistan and fought for control against many former Mujahedeen. Even then, the Taliban did not attack the US. Al Qaeda did.
1
@ЕвгенийБелошицкий-г4я There was no pro-American regime. Only a pro-stealing regime. The USSR collapsed after Afghanistan. WMDs? Please tell Russia to stop complaining about biolabs.
1
Because they had to make it seem like the attack was for the airbase. If they destroyed the SAMs in the canyon the enemy would know that's where they were headed.
1
Supermaneuverability is an air show trick. Doesn't help in combat unless you're already dead and you figure out that low chance of success is better than certain death.

@JosePineda-cy6om Extreme agility doesn't matter much. Agility has to be paired with speed, energy efficiency and energy recovery. Being agile while you're stopped in the middle of the air does not fool a missile.
