  2. Because the movie was written for Maverick to steal a F-14 Tomcat - only Iran has them. Why would the US have a strike mission out of nowhere? Nuclear enrichment is basically the only situation serious enough to warrant military response. Why couldn't it be done by long range cruise missile and avoid risking pilots? Facility built into a mountain. So even though the geography was fudged to have snowy mountains near the coastline, the nameless country had to be Iran and the target a bunker that can't just be targeted by missile so that Maverick has to do it the old fashioned way. And nuclear proliferation is the only thing that brings military action to the table without trying diplomacy, sanctions, etc first.

On a three dimensional space if you say "give me all points exactly 5 meters away from the point x,y,z" you get a sphere with 5 meter radius centered on point x,y,z. When a proto planet starts accretion of rock in space it grows into a sphere because the rocks "fall into place" as a sphere maintains equal distance from the center to the outer surface. A flat planet would have very weak gravity on the edges so it wouldn't grow by attracting rock.
