  3. - Was outdated by the time it was introduced - Took way longer to develop than it should, detachable mag Garand prototypes existed - Competed against the FAL in trials, but because it had a good chance of losing they started rigging the trials to make the M-14 come out on top - The new gas system required ao much precision that manufacturers could not hold the tolerances in a mass production settings. Many rifles delivered to the military were off spec due to the rush to get it in service.

  7.  @zerofactor7871  The issue is that production M14s of the time were totally hit and miss. The design used the White gas system which was a mistake, and caused so many problems a lot of parts were off spec when made at mass manufacturing rates. If you have a modern production M1A, or had the rifles hand picked for your unit, you never got a taste for the shitshow that was the M-14 adoption. The Italian BM59 is a better M-14 than the M-14.
