@bk109 "and was graduated to 1000" - Because that's used for volley fire. It's an old tactic, the men line up and sight their weapons to 1000m, align and shoot. The effect of several men firing at the same time is essentially the same as a machine gun laying down fire on a "beaten zone". I don't think there's a single instance of it being used like that, but that's why bolt action rifles had sights up to 1000/1100/1200 meters/yards. It wasn't for sniping shots, it was for an entire squad to mimic a machine gun if needed.

@Ontarianmm Shrapnel slows down pretty quick.

@evan14343 The rounds weren't "falling from the sky", they were shot with horizontal velocity and plunged into the victim. Plunging fire is deadly. A falling bullet isn't. When you shoot into the air, you can easily create plunging fire by accident so don't do it. But you won't kill anyone with a falling bullet.

@immikeurnot That's not true. There may be clones of the original rocket that lack the safety features out in the wild, but the RPG-7 rockets as intended have VP-7 and VP-22 fuses with an inertial safety.

@natas6647 Not as originally designed. With the caveat that there may be safety-less rockets produced and distributed in conflict areas, the RPG-7 rocket designs have a setback safety that requires the acceleration of the rocket to set off a pyrotechnic safety. Once it burns out, a spring loaded slider moves and closes the electric circuit between the peizoelectric generator and the fuse.

@evan14343 I volunteer to get a 147gr 9mm dropped on me from the top of the Empire State Building while only wearing a normal baseball hat. I don't want to bruise my scalp.

The detonator is not on the nose. That's a piezo electric generator that feeds into the detonator. The explosion needs to come from behind the warhead to focus the penetrator liner. The anti-RPG cages often disarm the warhead even in case of impact, because the aerodynamic cone gets crushed between the cage bars and shorts the circuit.

I second this. In a lot of Eastern European countries getting a carry license is a pain in the ass but people get blank guns for defense, as there are "blanks" that shoot pepper spray or "traumatic" rounds (rubber bullet).
