"why have they been using stamped and milled steel forever?" - because why change to plastic molding when you already paid for the machinery to make steel ones?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZtl4IkXkWk good primer from IvanTheTroll, one of the guys behind Deterrence Dispensed.

It's not a loophole. Machine guns are defined as weapons that repeat their firing cycle with a single trigger pull. When moving the crank you are creating multiple trigger pulls through the gearing mechanism.

@StrakanDocrusReakal How is that terrifying? First of all, it has to be cranked by hand. Even if you go crazy with the gearing to make it spin faster, you're only requiring more torque from the human arm which has limits. You can't operate it by motor or else the button you use to activate the motor becomes the trigger and it's an automatic machine gun. Second, firing faster only makes the firing cycle more strenuous on the gun and you'll risk blowing the barrels from heat. Third, the faster it fires the more ammo it wastes. Fourth, a gatling isn't exactly a very portable weapon. If you're worried about drivebys with them, a gatling doesn't output more firepower than four guys with guns in a car. It's the opposite of terrifying. It's actually laughable how non-threatning the Gatling is considering that there's plenty of replicas and homebuilts used at reenactments and nobody ever used one in a crime.

That's why they use the real steel trunnion from the parts kit.
1
@FreedomsLife1776 No, the dimensions were changed. It's much thicker and the areas around the trunnions have reinforcement.

Yeah. Ivan has a video on the AR magazine on his gunstreamer profile since his YT channel got taken down and incarbonite has a video on an extension to a 10 rounder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pY1h-fChgk

The guys at Deterrence Dispensed don't recommend it. PLA is fine, PLA+ is better. Zytel if you're feeling fancy.

The original DD didn't get shut down. They're still running and selling the Ghost Gunner cnc machines.

That's not even good criticism. Polymer AR lowers suck ass because most manufacturers want to retain the functionality of collapsible stocks and the nice looks of the original Stoner design. The GWACS lower was fine, but it locked you to the M16-style rifle fixed stock and most people don't like that. Hobbyist 3d printing gun manufacturers don't have the same concern as profit-driven gun manufacturers that need to make a product people want and are willing to pay. What matters is having gun. If you can 3d print, you have gun.

Good thing Deterrence Dispensed already released the files to make barrels at home.
1
Anyone can make a gun at home as long as it doesn't violate any law. EDIT: In the United States, just to clarify.

The Plastikov is something that was probably made for the lulz. The real goal is the FGC9, which is a Shuty AP9 with improvements and no longer needs the Glock barrel so it can be made in Europe because it requires 0 gun parts, and they're also working on a homemade nitrocellulose process that can be replicated even in countries where you can't get nitric acid.
