@Sman7290 The fouling is an issue but not the main problem. When the powder was changed, it still had to meet muzzle velocity specs. So they loaded the cartridges pretty "hot" for the same velocity achieved with IMR powder. For whatever reason, port pressure was not a consideration on the specs. So the overcharged ammo had excessive port pressure, which caused rifles to not only attempt an extraction while the case was still pressed against the chamber, but also caused excessive bolt velocity. Both situations could be a source of jams, especially if the chamber was pitted due to lack of chroming and the cartridge walls were gripping the rough surface. The powder was not clean burning. But the AR can handle dirty ammo to some extent. This ammo was completely overdriving the system. If I'm not mistaken the issue was calcium deposits from the additives fouling the inside of the gas block but it would take a lot of firing for you to choke the system. The hot ammo issue could cause you a headache on the first trigger pull if you were unlucky. And that was the main problem.

SA-2s destroying hundreds of expensive jets had nothing to do with the rifle used.

No it was designed so that you could carry a LAW on your back to vibe check a BTR and still carry more ammo than a Soviet trooper thanks to the weight savings.

@slimpickins09er87 The caliber change program began before the rifle change program, and it had to do with studies on firepower and projected needs in a Cold War gone hot scenario. Which means having to deal with Soviet armor. Yes, opposing forces tend to follow if they see you use something to your advantage. Stealth is great, so Russia and China are doing it too.

@ARandomCatOnAKeyboard The issue is that they had moved away from that original "trigger shaped" charging handle and adding a side charging bolt would mean opening a channel on the receiver which would allow for ingress of debris and dirt. Neither was an option and the FA was the "least bad" design so it stuck.

Because it was made to eat a steady diet of 10,000 rounds of +P++++ nuclear hot 45 loads and the madmen at HK actually did it.
