  1. In the past the AK was the big meanie gun to take off the streets. It was cheap enough for criminals to make "choppas" and there were also a few mass shootings like Stockton. And when the news media captioned photos of ARs they called them "AKs". Then with all the import bans, sanctions, etc the AK became more expensive while post-2004 (AWB sunset) economies of scale made AR prices steadly come down. Now all guns are labeled AR15s by the media (like the Galil in that MCU movie).
