  2. The US did not back the people who did 9/11 to fight the USSR. The US backed extremists to destabilize the Middle East. The support for the Mujahideen would not have lead to blowback had the CIA not purposefully backed people they wanted to use as assets in the future. The US was neutral on Ho Chi Minh at first. There was no reason to back French colonialism but also no reason to lock horns with France.
