It involved brutal fighting and even genocides. But a lot of that land has very low population density, so for many life didn't change. In fact some regions were so remote that scammers would travel there and say they were representatives of the Russian government so taxes would be collected by them. There's even the joke that somewhere in Siberia there's a man wondering who the current Tsar is.

There's oligarchs falling off windows and propagandists being blown up in Russia. The US hasn't had a good red vs blue fight in months, maybe over a year, and they usually are just Antifa vs Proud Boys having fist fights.

The IMF has no means to investigate Russia's internal economic situation so they just reported Rosstat figures. Their "prediction" is entirely based on what the Russian government said.

 @569-m5p the USSR was looted by Yeltsin and his friends. The oligarchs aren't called "John Smith". They are former Soviet/Russian.
