@gratius1394 Yeah, there's no "peacetime" army, this is the army. Adding conscripts to the mix would do wonders for the numbers, but would they have to run across fields? They'd need tanks and armored vehicles to advance.

@gratius1394 The capabilities of the Soviets were greatly aided by foreign aid. Lend-Lease gave the Red Army the trucks they needed, and helped their supply lines with train cars and locomotives. They also fought a Germany that had the US and allies doing trade deals to starve Germany out of strategic materials, and American/British bombers pummeled German industry. Let's re-run a simulation of the Eastern Front but this time the US aids Germany. Wouldn't be as pretty for the Soviets, would it?

@gratius1394 The Russian armed forces organization is irrelevant, they lost a ton of equipment with their "peacetime" army so their "wartime" army has to fight with stuff pulled out of storage.

@gratius1394 You won't find volunteers in Silicon Valley, but you will in San Francisco or LA. Cities are not known for their rich population. There's plenty of people struggling in cities. Catch my drift? There's no struggling people in Moscow and St. Petersburg? Are they all Instagram models and influencers? Everyone's working on IT or finance? Who's working at Vkusno i Tochka? Who's sweeping the streets? There's no blue collar workers in the two major cities in Russia? Reservists can sign short term contracts. They can't be called into service, but they can be offered beaucoup rubles for signing up.

@gratius1394 Contrary to your opinion, the facts on the ground are that the mechanized units suffered losses, so having your mechanized units composed of foot soldiers with no mechanization is a pretty big problem. Do you have any military experience other than ignoring Russian armored vehicle losses? They lose a couple of armored vehicles every day, and their reserve storage has a significant percentage of the vehicles in a state of disrepair. Think. Think. Your military experience taught you what "rust" and "no spare parts" means, right?

@gratius1394 The thing is that the US looks for bodies in the countryside, the inner city, colleges, recent college graduates, etc. A guy working IT in Moscow could have lost his job due to the sanctions. Is he getting recruited? Or sheltered from the facts of war?

@gratius1394 Reservists are not off limits. They're explicitly recruiting them because they can sign a contract and be sent into combat with a 7 day refresher course (there's rumors that they're given 2 days of training and then shipped to the front but you know how rumors are). Unfortunately image search is terrible these days and links get comments deleted, but people have photographed their recruitment posters. They're promising huge signing bonuses and pretty high wages compared to the Russian average.

@gratius1394 You were talking about Soviets and what the Germans thought of them. That's unrelated to Ukraine.

@gratius1394 Nobody said anything about a draft. Sweep the street for 100 bucks a month, or serve 6 months at 2000 bucks a month with a 3000 dollar signing bonus? I know a guy who knows a guy from Belarus. Was working IT, joined Wagner to make bank and is an artilleryman in Ukraine. I hope he gets maimed. Not killed, just disabled for life.
