@ujbx Missing the forest for the trees. The critical point was the Solidarity movement in Poland picking up steam and instead of repeating the Czechoslovakia or Hungary gameplan they decided to sit that one out because Afghanistan had exposed their military. Russia was confident in sending troops to the Baltics but not Poland. That was when the penny dropped. The Vietnam projection theory doesn't make sense. Politics ended the war rather than the war ending politics. It was the Watergate scandal which put the nail in the coffin and took away the political stability to commit to South Vietnam.

@DavidRedshaw-i2h the frozen lasagnas were better with horse meat. The European horse meat scandal forced brands to switch to cheaper beef and pork which were inferior in taste. The horse meat was fine.

@owen-trombone 1. North Korea was nearly defeated until China intervened. The South Korean territory was still a net positive, the Chinese losses prevented Mao from invading Taiwan, and Mao's son perishing in the conflict prevented a Mao dynasty. 2. North Vietnam accepted the peace conditions and then waited for a couple of years to invade again. At that point the political turmoil caused by Watergate made intervention a political faux pas.

@owen-trombone 3. Iraq was defeated twice under Saddam and under new leadership Iraq was an allied nation in the fight against ISIS. How is that a loss? 4. The Taliban like North Vietnam signed a treaty and broke it once the US left. The Taliban defeated the ANA, not the US.
