  1. The inescapable reality is that those "SPGs" will be called to perform the duties of tanks when needed. We still see the footage of Russian tanks being used in assaults, and both the Kharkiv and Kherson offensives required the use of tanks as tanks by Ukrainian forces. They're being used as SPGs because the conditions for concentrating force an breaching frontlines simply aren't there yet.

  3. The Phantom still scored the vast majority of kills by missile, with the addition of the gun not making much of a difference. Even the F-8, "the last gunfighter", claimed more kills by Sidewinder than by gun.

The USAF scored about a hundred missile kills with the Phantom and only around a dozen kills with guns on pod-equipped/E variant Phantoms.

The thousands of T-72 turned out to not really be there so they needed the thousands of T-62s, of which they're planning to refurbish... Around eight hundred. Hulls sitting on the rain and snow for decades really aren't up to snuff.

That's essentially undeniable, the StG wasn't the first weapon issued in the battlefield to have detachable magazines. Also, the Soviets designed the 7.62x39mm M43 cartridge before they even had a weapon to fire it. So while the cartridge was definitely influenced by 7.92 Kurz, you can't say the AK derived it from the StG. The rifle was designed around the caliber rather than being designed to mimic the StG.

  9. This is not true. By 1972 the introduction of Teaball allowed the USAF to outscore the Navy with a whopping 15 to 1 kill ratio until operations ended in 1973. Not only did they have better training and improved cockpit "switchology", they were at this point fixing the major issue which was terrible ground radar coverage.

  11. Several issues here. First of all, cancelling the attack plays into the insurgency. They're going to be back. You're spending millions of dollars for every week you stay in country, be in hazard pay, keeping air conditioning units working, security contractors, etc. Fleeing when facing insurmountable odds and waiting for the next opportunity to attack. They can just go home and wait two weeks while the US economy is slowly bled by the costs of occupation. I'd rather drop a precision guided bomb from tens of thousand feet in the air, unseen and unheard and get them all at once while they're clustered before they scatter. Second, it's not hard to believe considering that not only the aircraft was supposed to be originally retired in 1993, it already required Boeing to receive a billion dollar contract... twice... to rebuild the aging wings, the company that made it went out of business in 2003, and it's been mostly replaced by F-16s, Strike Eagles and F/A-18s.

  16. That project fell through, only a few aircraft were acquired. The stated purpose is training other nations but it's obviously for SOCOM, which was covered by the Bronco against ISIS. The Bronco's return was short lived due to maintenance costs. The Army has washed their hands out of the A-10 issue and their official position is that they only need ordnance on target and don't care what delivered it.

  19.  @navyreviewer  It's important to also consider two issues - the Navy had the better Sidewinders as they correctly predicted before the war that the 9B wouldn't cut it and started developing an upgrade before Vietnam, and the USAF had better luck with the Sparrows because as the Ault report confirmed the Navy Sparrows were subjected to the harsher conditions of carrier service but with looser maintenance scheduling than USAF Sparrows.

The Ukrainian tactic (which Russians quickly adapted to) was to bait a Russian fighter into shooting and try to escape, knowing the Russian would easily chase him down and kill him. However, as the Russian pilot gabe chase, there would be a Ukrainian wingman flying low that would spring up from below and shoot at the Russian. A trap. Elephant in a hallway. The vast majority of pilots show down in air combat did not know they were targeted until it was too late. This is the prime example. Doesn't matter the Ukranian fighters are less modern, doesn't matter their missiles don't have "first shoot" capability". First shoot is based on the wingman seeing the chase aircraft while the chasing aircraft is focused on shooting down the bait aircraft. In Vietnam the NV pilots countered then Phantom by waiting for them to be escorting bombers at slow speed, fly around them and strike from behind at high speed. Doesn't matter the Phantom was superior, they got trapped. Then Phantom pilots responded by flying in bomber formation. When NV pilots expected to target Phantoms escorting bombers, turned out it was a full flight if Phantoms looking for a fight. That's another trap.

  25. They don't have T-64s. The T-64s were built in Ukraine, and deemed too expensive to build an entire army with them. So the T-72s was developed as a cost-cutting alternative. Russia has the means to produce and refurbish the T-72, while the T-64 facilities are stuck in Ukraine so they lost access to those after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The T-62s? Those have been used as main battle tanks. There's video evidence of their use and destruction.

  26. There was no overthrow. Yanukovych passed laws against free speech and limiting the right to protest, then had hired thugs and police beat down protesters. People rose up in defiance of the new laws, police started shooting steel slugs meant to disable engine blocks into crowds. The Berkut special unit (Russian-trained) was also suspected of using snipers to target both police and protesters to escalate the violence and get Kiev under martial law. After all of this, Yanukovych feared prosecution so he fled to Mother Russia. His own party disavowed him, and the parliament voted to officially remove him from power. He wasn't overthrown. He fled because he was a coward who didn't want to face the charges for the deaths. And fled to the country he was truly loyal to.

You have no facts to back it up any more than I could reply by simply saying "probably not" and moving on. The earlier Phantom losses occurred when USAF Phantoms flying in blind with no radar coverage were flying at a slower pace to escort bombers and fell into ambushes where Vietnamese MiGs came around the border and did high speed passes for a hit and run attack. The MiGs got away not because of lack of guns, but because there was no chance for the F-4s to accelerate and catch up to them. Let alone get a gun kill. Not to mention that the gun kill is much more difficult to score, and airplanes carried multiple missiles. Even though failure rates were abysmal, a second missile would do a lot more than maneuvering for a gun kill. Either way, early missile failure rates were not just caused by their unreliability, but also because pilots were firing missiles outside of proper launch parameters and ground crews were mishandling the weapons. After extra training for the pilots and ground crews, the issues were not fully resolved but were greatly minimized. Phantoms flying combat patrols and looking for MiGs instead of escorting other aircraft had a good kill ratio. The gun wasn't that big of a deal. "where a gun would've given an easy kill" - Guns are not easy kills. In fact there were squadron leaders who did not authorize their pilots to fly with gun pods because they knew they did not have enough training to put them to good use. "the fact that the next generation of fighters (The Teen Series)" - Two of them are multirole fighters and thus may have to use the gun for ground strafing. One of the use of gun pods on the F-4 was actually the USMC fitting one under the belly and two under the wings to let loose on the ground. Not for air to air combat. "they DID learn their lesson" - Okay, which lesson was that? You're attributing a mostly false narrative as the reason for a decision to be made when there are more logical reasons behind that decision. While aerial gunnery is an important part of pilot training it's generally assumed that in the real world if you get into a gun fight you and your wingmen already made a series of bad decisions to let the situation get to that point. Especially with high off bore axis missiles being a thing.

  31. That depends entirely on many factors. There's been many production batches of F-16 and different Block upgrades. It depends on flight hours logged per aircraft, a larger airforce may log less hours per aircraft while a small force probably flew their airframes until the wheels fell off. If you have a force with a hundred F-16s, an upgrade may make sense thanks to economies of scale. If you have 30, it may be cheaper to just buy 30 F-35s. Aircraft pricing is very counter-intuitive because people always assume doing X is cheaper than Y but that's not a given.

There's a few instances of bad people who during a war committed heinous acts. There was a group of US troops who left the base, killed a family and comitted SA on a young girl. Who benefited from that? Nobody. War brings out the worst in people.

Air power over Ukraine - when Kharkiv happened they stopped responding to calls for help due to the number of airframes lost in 1-2 days. Ukrainians certainly don't leave airpower out of the equation. That's why they bring air defense traps with them. Attack a Russian position to get them to call air support, aircraft come in, defenses were pre-positioned to ambush the Russians. That's how Kharkiv was possible despite the so-called Russian air superiority. Ukraine is on the defense. Russia picked the time and place. They had every advantage and squandered it. That's why we laugh. You try to sucker punch someone, but slip and fall, we laugh.

  51. Armies are also smaller today, since mechanization and electronics replaced manpower. Just imagine the number of scouts and recon elements you'd need to get the coverage a humble drone can get in a day. The clearer battlefield picture also made dangerous to amass too much force. As soon as a staging area is discovered by drone, aircraft or satellite, rocket artillery with cluster warheads would shred the attacking force before it even began the assault.

  55. The infantry support vehicle still has to cross from staging area to battle in order to support the infantry. Enemy will see tank, and target it like a tank. The crew can scream pretty loud that they're just "infantry support" but the enemy will bring down the hammer on them.
