Comscription in itself isn't the issue. The thing with Russia is that conscripts serve in Russia, and in theory mobilized men are expected to have retained skills from their service so a refresher course is all it takes to bring them up to speed.

@merocaine I mean, in 2011 the Russian government even closed the WW2 archives to western researchers and historians. Expecting a "Russian army expert" to have contact with the Russian army post-2014 is kind of a tall order.

@hendrikvanleeuwen9110 More like 200,000 with >50,000 Donbas militia. And there's an unknown number of rotations. Russia pulled troops from the bases in the far East, Kaliningrad, the Finnish border, Syria, sailors who were supposed to be on naval vessels and troops from the strategic rocket forces, instructors and reservists (BARS units) were sent. They also had a recruitment drive for Army contractors with huge cash bonuses, and the PMCs dropped the requirement for prior military service to join. That was before the mobilization and the prisoner recruitment by Wagner so there may be a hundred to two hundred thousand boost that was never mentioned anywhere. "Meanwhile Russia's first draft of 300,000 remains largely in tact and waiting for deployment" - That's not true. We have the photos and documents of mobilized men who got killed within a week of mobilization starting. Russia had a critical manpower shortage and sent men straight to the front to plug gaps. They're not intact. In fact things got so bad, the Third Army Corps was almost immediately split and sent to Kherson, Kharkiv, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts rather than fight as a cohesive unit.

@pilotmanpaul They already deployed more than that. There's a reason for the decrees expanding the size of the Russian army - Russia has sent everyone from sailors to strategic rocket forces troops into Ukraine.

@hendrikvanleeuwen9110 You're gonna have to show the photos of fallen Syrians in Ukraine. If that was true, the photos would be everywhere. Also, as soon as Chechens started suffering losses Kadyrov called them back. He refuses to let Chechens participate in frontline fighting because of the stability issue back home. He can't lose his private army.

@hendrikvanleeuwen9110 Mariupol was right at the start of the war. They suffered heavy casualties, Kadyrov posted a video where he was visibly upset, and most likely worked a deal in which Kadyrovites would be spared from the heavy fighting.

@bozo5632 The pictures for Kharkiv are widely available. I'd say roads looking like a tornado cut through a butcher shop counts as an ass whooping. There's things that happened to Russians in Kharkiv I never guessed could happen to a human body.

@filmandfirearms regular Wagner has former elite soldiers with combat experience from Donbas, Syria, etc and had years of tactical training courses under their belts. A Wagner prisoner's job is simply carving a path for the elite to follow through and break the defenses - it would take YEARS to make them soldiers on the same level.

@nair.127 If you were to sharpen a shovel, you'd do it on the sides and not the tip that goes first into the ground. The blade on a shovel wouldn't have a sharp edge but an edge, the kind of steel used wouldn't have the properties to hold the edge for long if you made it sharp like a sword.

@mladenmatosevic4591 Yeah, we can start one or two plants to manufacture 155mm shells without going into "war economy". We can defeat Russia without straining extremely hard. We're under strain because we spent tons of money keeping stuff afloat during the coof and now the chickens came home to roost.

@hendrikvanleeuwen9110 The number of mobilizations is disingenuous. Russia mobilized a ton of men at once without the facilities or instructors to process them. Remember the cling wrap teepees and the men being dumped into what looked like empty airfields after their bus ride? Ukraine mobilized in waves to avoid that.

I does matter because the entire argument was "One single Russian mobilization already called up more men than several waves of Ukrainian mobilizations". Ukraine is limited by how many it can train, so it splits men by waves so they can go one after another. Russia called a bunch of people at the same time, and couldn't train them. The true reservists were the BARS units. These are just former conscripts.

The "million standing army" includes strategic rocket forces, Navy, logistical support, etc. Ukraine had to do drafts independently of losses. They did one draft to train who they could train. Then another. Then another. It's like trying to bake 100 loaves on bread in a single oven. They have to wait their turn. Doesn't matter how many times I drop a loaf of bread on the ground. I still need to bake more.

@maryginger4877 Big picture generalities: Russia expends artillery gratuitously. Russia's tactics are based on Soviet tactics, which had "scientific" metrics. On an area of "X" by "Y" meters you expend "N" number of shells for "T" time. The enemy will be considered suppressed and you attack with "A" number of assault teams. Well, the problem is that this means the opponent can bait artillery to waste time and shells into positions, or even the area can be abandoned but Russia will shell the empty sector for hours. Hence the shell hunger. Another factor, overuse of artillery causes the barrels and recoil mechanisms to wear out. Which explains why Russia is pulling progressively older guns and using shells they stockpilled of a caliber that they weren't using before. The "daft numbers" are based on actual battles or surveillance, you're looking at factors that actually don't mean anything. You can have more horsepower than anyone else and still lose all the races.

@bozo5632 You're the epitome of the meme "haters will see you teleport and say you can't afford a car". Yeah, Ukraine didn't get anything out of Kharkiv and Kherson. They just got land they wanted back and showed Western partners they could be trusted with more weapons. Next year Ukraine could be waving goodbye at Russian troops being ferried out of Crimea and you'll still be saying they didn't get anything out of it.

@filmandfirearms That's not how it works. First, the Wagner structure cannot be compared with an army. A regular 11B would never be treated like Wagner. When Russian soldiers are treated like Wagner they get a smartphone and record videos asking the wives and mothers associations to write formal complaints about their commanders to the prosecutor's office. Russia is corrupt, but the squeaky wheels sometimes get the grease. Wagnerites get a bullet. The prisoners are used as recon by fire (aka bait), supply mules, etc. We're not talking about officer corps. A "private" in Wagner is above a prisoner. And even Progozhin himself commented about the "roosters" and how prison hierarchy itself has untouchables.
