  24.  @ROGER2095  the RBMK reactors kept being used with some added safeties, Chernobyl's engineering could have survived if it wasn't for plain old Soviet incompetence. The plant was operational even though it was behind on safety testing. Obviously the plant manager wanted the tests to be rushed because everything is based on lying to higher ups. They screwed around with power generation before the tests because it was the end of the month and factories needed to fill quotas. The inherent danger of the design was theorized by scientists but the paper suppressed by Soviet censorship. So when the Xenon poisioned reactor was about to stall they pulled out as many of the control rods as possible to surge the power back up, and doing so triggered the positive void coefficient as the water turned to steam. The scramming procedure forced the graphite to go through the part of the reactor that was going out of control before the boron neutron absorber control rod could tame the reaction.

  29. It's still a testbed. If it does work another one will be built for power. The current fusion tests last 10-12 seconds. The next one should work for hours I think.

Like a car moving has a higher pitch when approaching and a deeper rumble when moving away. Instead of understanding the reasons why people say the things they do, you refuse to look into anything and act incredulous when the information is brought to you. Instead of listening for the car and realizing it is approaching you, you decide to stand in the road and question where the driver wants to go.

Politics forced the nuclear industry to adopt more dangerous reactor designs that were suitable for military uses, while suppressing research into safer reactor designs. When the documentation on the Oak Ridge experiments with molten salt were "rediscovered" the DoE started getting questions about it and repeatedly said they were looking into it without ever doing anything. Now China and India will move forward with next gen reactor designs because politics dragged its feet.

They can't be built because you can't just build a new design without DoE approval and they purposefully dragged their feet despite being asked about it in Congressional hearings on an almost yearly basis. Like I said, China and India are moving forward with their projects. Meanwhile Trump said he'd have the DoE look into it back in 2017 or 2018. Don't know how that's going.

  45. Hydroelectric is very environmentally damaging. We can't keep building more because of the interference with water life. They have to build chutes for fish to migrate upstream and lay eggs.

  47. Waste disposal is no big deal. Finland and Sweden are moving forward with geological disposal. Newer reactors can consume most spent fuel we keep. There's actually a naturally occuring nuclear reactor that stopped 2 billion years ago, it only moved a couple of meters since and doesn't leech materials through water. Nature babysat it just fine.

  53. There was nothing wrong with the region. Building next to water is logical. The only thing that failed was that when cooling was shut down as part of procedure they could not start it back up and the generators were flooded.

  55. That's not a problem, people MAKE it a problem so that they can complain. Look up "natural nuclear reactor", I think its in Gabon or something, the radioactive waste has not moved more than a few meters in 2 billion years and doesn't leech into water.

  56.  @ts9749  It is not a problem. We know how to safely contain nuclear waste but at every step of the way the anti-nuclear movement opposes every attempt to deal with it. At least in the US, Finland and Sweden are moving ahead with their geological repositories.

  58.  @jarrod752  You can disagree all you want, it's just the facts. Modern gen reactors can't go into meltdown either, and geothermal does leak radiation. Studies have found that geothermal in Iceland pulls radioactive isotopes from the crust and the sludge that is pumped back up contaminates the surface because there's no nuclear regulation overseeing the process. Radioactive decay is responsible for at least half of the geothermal temperature gradient and used to be more, so there would be no geothermal with pressure alone.

  60.  @philtimmons722  I don't think it's necessarily the math but working in the industry. I had a classmate in college whose mother worked in a power company. She admitted in private that the wind farm had been a massive scam because instead of the power going to the localized grid it had to plug back into the larger grid "hub" so to speak, and contractors cheapened on the connection so the cables had greater losses over a larger distance. Also the position of the turbines disregarded the studies on efficiency and they were placed where they'd have to pay less subsidies to the counties involved. Obviously I cannot give details that would identify the location or company to not get anyone in trouble. My point is this corruption affects everything, but wind power is already in the edge of not being that great that the normal corruption might actually make the wind farm a net negative. The added corruption of all the government subsidies just sweetens the deal for anyone who wants to make a fat stack building stuff people don't need.
