  1. +Astfgl it's not ridiculous in a car because cars are mobile and unplugged from any external power source. Gasoline, LPG, diesel etc have greater energy density than stuff like hydrogen (hydrogen molecule is H2, gasoline is C8H18). Even if you compress hydrogen to liquid (which in itself is a whole new problem) the gasoline still carries more energy in the tank. It's not ridiculous because you have to understand that batteries were terrible for storing energy in a vehicle. Look at electric airplanes, they had to be super lightweight flying wings with solar panels on top. The first electric ducted fan aircraft which was more or less conventional only flew a few years ago.

  2. mbrij 96 High specific impulse matters more than energy density in spacecraft. You can have a gigantic reservoir of hydrogen attached to a shuttle/inside a rocket, but in a car you have limited space.
