The USMC trains for FARP operation with F-35Bs.

@ghostviggen the F-35 was built to face the toughest opponent the US could conjure up. Are you seriously out of your mind?

@ghostviggen Gripen's failed bids shows that apparently only Saab understands EWS. That was sarcasm, by the way. It means that whatever Saab is selling, people aren't buying.

That's rich considering the number of improprieties allegedly comitted by Saab and BAE Systems. It's the Saab Gripen that was tarnished by bribery scandals. Stealth isn't just surprise. It's hitting without being hit. You go up against a defender with stealth when your aircraft are not low-observable, your aircraft will fall out of the sky without knowing who is targeting them or how much like Iraqi pilots were grounded and had aircraft inspected for sabotage when Iranian F-14s shot them down with AIM-54 Phoenixes. Planes were just turning into balls of flame out of nowhere, without engaging in combat.

Kasparov hates Putin, though.

Saab really doesn't have a boneyard full of them just for a live fire test.
2
But it isn't. Most of the low cost claims are thinly veiled Saab marketing claims or flat out fabrications by authors who can't source their claims. Nearly every time the Gripen went head to head with other 4th gens the operational costs were similar enough not to make a difference. The F-35 isn't "wasted" just like an F-16 isn't. The F-35 looked like sci-fi in 2005 but we're at the point we can see in the horizon that it's production rate will make it an incredibly common fighter.

It is that important. Stealth is using dark clothes at night. EW is shining your flashlight and hoping you're not seen.

@marcuslang6153 "Name an occasion where a gripen performed badly, if you will." - Export sales.
2
@ViffeNify You can't buy 10x the aircraft by buying Gripen.

@jackstreet6979 "Hey man aircraft are complicated, don't fall for the marketing hype" "Source? 🤓"

@leifiseland1218 The price is worth it.
1
@andersmalmgren6528 You can burn through EW because an aircraft's EW emitters will never overpower emitters which do not have weight concerns.
1
@ghostviggen If you're buying Saabs in the year of Our Lord 2023 you're expecting the enemy to not shoot back. You get stealth if you worry about shots coming your way.

Gripen fanboys plague the internet. In fact F-35 hate was extremely common online, thanks to "experts" like Pierre Sprey. In regards to aggressive marketing, Saab and BAE systems have been caught in bribery scandals.

@adadigirolamo1073 Which studies? Because Gripen lost a ton of bids. MiG-21s aren't enough. Countries prefer to have a smaller amount of more powerful fighters than hundreds of rudimentary ones. The war in Ukraine shows that Western aircraft are mostly safe without Sweden's philosophy. Look at the satellite pictures of post-strike craters in Ukrainian air bases. Russian missiles land with less precision than American strikes on air bases 30 years ago.

@marcuslang6153 Every outlet in the industry? Do these outlets have access to detailed information from within the halls of air force chiefs of staff? I don't trust a writer for an "outlet" over actual engineers, planners, accountants, etc who know the TRUE numbers rather than the marketing wank.

@marcuslang6153 The customers aren't disappointed but they're also not doing a lot of fighting.

@nattygsbord That's a major red flag considering that the Eurofighter Captor-E has been a clustertruck of F-35 proportions. Gee, the Gripen radar has the same basic design as the Eurofighter's Captor, which has been begging for the AESA replacement for like 15 years?

Dispersal only helps if you know the strike is coming.
