  1. It's for the sake of appearances. It's actually a "Muay Thai camp" - set up for the foreign visitors. I seriously doubt the program gets enough funding to make it look "non-prison" all year round.

  2. I'm white and I can confirm, most of the fighters have a trashy look. I do kickboxing in a martial arts gym owned by a university. I'm well aware that 90% of the other combat gyms are not located in such nice parts of town. Gyms are big, specially multi-sport gyms that have classes in the same schedules and need several rings. Fighting sports doesn't bring that much money so a lot of gyms are located where land is cheap - away from the nice, privileged parts of town. And yes, fighting sports have the tendency to attract bullies and douchebags, and while you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover douchebags do have a "uniform"/"dress code" which we all learn to identify and react to when you see the guy with a crew cut, gold chains and all-Adidas attire.
