  3. Not just that. America got by with very rudimentary quality control because the rest of the world was in shambles after WWII. American goods were the best available when everyone was trying to bomb each others' factories. Then Americans like Deming went over to Japan to teach the fundamental principles of quality and how you shouldn't simply do quality control but improve quality at every step of the procedure - although more costly, you save more money by rejecting less parts and wasting less time. In two to three decades the Japanese were beating American cars so bad the government had to strike a deal to limit Japanese imports and put Japanese-owned factories in America to prevent the money leaving the states.
