@naughtyue7284 except that a) criminals think unarmed police are a joke, there's videos of UK police that pretty much beg for the Benny Hill theme song and b) presence of armed police units in the UK has increased in the last decade. Armed police units were used pretty sparingly but now they doing patrols more often, getting called out more often, etc

Not really. Look at Mexico or Brazil. Tons of gun murder but it's very difficult to own guns. It's actually easier to own guns in the UK.

Some guy is firing on a crowd, you think he's "allowing" anyone to do anything? He'll probably get shot before he even realizes there's armed resistance. "cock the gun back" - why would the gun be unloaded? "remove the safety" - modern guns don't require safeties. If you carry an older style of gun the safety is flicked off during the draw stroke so it's always ready to fire. "Even with conceiled carry, and proper training, odds of you hitting innocent bystanders is very high" - because the possibility of collateral is worse than the certainty of multiple fatalities. Okay.

@SuperWardy85 there have been multiple shootings in the UK since the last ban. Australia had even more. They had Monash in 2002, and there was a mass shooting that left 7 dead last year. There have also been a few in the 2000's and 2010's.

@crackert5263 that's not semi-automatic. The term "automatic" is synonymous with "autoloader" aka a firearm that operates by itself to load the following shot. A double-action revolver still uses manual action to spin to rotate the cylinder.

@bartilliak what I said above. There's examples of auto-loading revolvers like the Webley–Fosbery, but the majority of revolvers are not semi-automatic as they still require a manual rotation of the cylinder to load the following shot.

Except that several studies have found that the 1997 NFA did not have any effect and was in fact a huge waste of money. The guns surrendered in the buyback have already been replaced in the last 20 years judging from the weapon imports numbers, gun violence was decreasing since the late 60's and there was even a school shooting in Monash University in 2002 which throws a wrench in the argument that the 1997 NFA "worked".
