  1. The defenders had to stay inside the bunker due to the shelling outside. The artillery barrage only stops when the attackers get near.

  2. That's exactly how an assault is conducted across an open field. Artillery has to suppress the defensive positions, sometimes for hours at a time, and stop as soon as the advancing force gets near the trench.
