  1. The technique is BS but as a last resort knocking the slide out of battery does prevent the pistol from firing. For semiautomatic function the trigger mechanism has a disconnector that gets tripped by rewards slide movement. The more reliable technique is doing it to a double action revolver without the hammer cocked because grabbing the cylinder so that it can't spin also blocks the trigger from being pulled. On the other hand as soon as you let go off the revolver it can work again, while a semi-automatic pistol has a chance that the slide did not return to battery through spring pressure.
