Russian artillery covers entire fields in craters. More artillery doesn't mean more hits, it means more fires. Fires that don't hit don't produce casualties. Also, Russian shelling has reduced significantly.

How is that the best information? Russia is doing human wave assaults and driving armored vehicles into minefields. Defender's advantage - Russia has to cross no man's land, into Ukrainian sights.

 @ColdPotato Not true. The official claim is that 300k were mobilized. To be 10x the Ukrainians, mobilization would have to be 2.1 million.

1. Bakhmut was a speedbump in the Kramatorsk-Sloviansk defensive line. If Russia takes Bakhmut, the next step will be an even worse uphill battle for Russia. 2. Bakhmut is uninhabitable at this point. Retreating would expose more civilians so it's preferable to fight there than evacuating a larger city. 3. Russia is bleeding itself in Bakhmut. If Russia is willing to get their army destroyed there, why try to fight anywhere else? 4. Finally, Bakhmut was strategically important when Russia held Izyum as it allowed them to do the pincer maneuvers to encircle Ukranian forces. But the Kharkiv offensive made that impossible.
