  4. They were made for Vietnam before SA-2s were donated by the USSR. 14.5mm AA and sporadic 23mm presence. Designers cannot look into the future and changing an aircraft after it is built is nearly impossible. So the A-10 was made for a war that mo longer existed. It was given a new role - sacrificing itself. It was known that A-10 pilots in West Germany would be shot down in a couple of weeks, enough time for US reinforcements to cross the Atlantic by ship.
