The IKEA crap never failed me, to be fair. Hypocrisy was always acceptable.

This. If Mercedes made a bomb proof car, people would complain about the price. Nobody would think "what a great deal, I'll drive it until 2070!".

It's not planned obsolecence if there is no intent to cause failure. "It doesn't have to last past X years" doesn't mean "make it fail after X years". Because if you take care of your stuff, it will last well beyond X. It's just that the average consumer has no idea what he's doing. Making small batches of bomb proof cars for a minority of gearheads would not be profitable even with a price premium.
