  1. The AC-130 is mostly limited to attacking at night because of how easy it is to target it with manually aimed AAA, which is common enough in insurgency use to be a threat. Even in Afghanistan they authorize more daytime flights but there's still danger because the Taliban would try to put AAA on top of mountains to get extra range and get harassing fire on them, thankfully not effective fire. By no means is it an invalid idea, but these gunships are somewhat vulnerable and the ability to pylon turn and fire sideways doesn't bring much to the table especially at a smaller size. With cheap counter insurgency aircraft like the Super Tucano and weapons like the APKWS it's possible to fire rocket volleys while flying forward from miles away and have the rockets guided to target by a lasing pod on the aircraft itself, or lased by a MQ-9 UAV. You get the same effect as a gun burst on the ground but without having to do the pylon turn and fire sideways.
