  1. The material isn't that special. It's an obvious choice. It's dense, and sectional density is important for penetration. It's hard, so it wouldn't deform as much as other materials. Tungsten cores are already used in armor piercing rounds of various calibers, from small arms to discarding fin sabots fired from tanks.
