@goead Because there was more than enough footage of the original landing so they reused the tapes on other missions. For whatever reason, maybe they were cataloging missing stuff or something, they put out a request to see if anyone had them laying around which started a search through the archives and they concluded it was reused. It wasn't a big deal but people go "ermaghed they lost the tapes".

@junglegem Because many of the components were built using outdated methods used by skilled workers that already retired and died. Trying to remake the old Saturn V would cost more than simply starting from scratch with a modern design.

Because the computer back then only had to perform "simple" calculations. Your iPod also has more memory and speed than intercontinental ballistic missiles or the bombing computers in fighter jets of the time.

@sirrathersplendid4825 You've already twisted my words and strawmanning is an admission that you're wrong. Nobody said that there was too much footage. All the existed footage already existed in more than enough backups that it was found unnecessary to preserve the data tapes and they were reused as it was standard procedure. Yes, the event was so important that many tuned in to the NASA transmission that was coming from space at the time. Not a joke. They didn't just delete it. They had an expensive tape format, the same footage was recorded on other formats, so they reused the tape. The footage was not deleted because there's copies. And the search for the original data tapes actually ended up providing NASA with higher quality copies that had been forgotten and they were restored.

@Ivan Zhao How is it incompetence to reuse expensive tape formats when you already have all the data backed up in multiple parts of the world?
