@jtjames79 Secret aircraft are constantly exposed. The F-117 sightings were common, and the government just made it public anyway.

And the F-117 was known. It was presumed to be called F-19 and to have a rounded shape. The aircraft was secret, but its existence was known because people in the desert saw the F-117s flying at night. Even Tom Clancy had a chapter about them in one of his books, where he assumed they'd be used to penetrate Soviet air space and shoot missiles at AWACS to blind their situational awareness. In real life it was a bomber, and while it was considered they didn't want to ever mount a missile on a F-117 and shoot it fearing that the rocket motor would burn off the stealth coating. If you look up "F-19" you'll find scale model kits from back then. The aircraft was secret but famous enough to have model kits and videogames made about it.

@mrmister385 First, a grainy picture was shown in a press conference in 1988, and in April 1990 it was allowed to fly in daytime in full view of spectators. That was prior to the 1991 Gulf War. Anyway, the aircraft was known. It was called F-19 by the public, and an incorrect scale model was made. Tom Clancy called it the F-19A Ghostrider (nicknamed "Frisbee" by crews) in Red Storm Rising. Microprose released a flight sim called F-19 Stealth Fighter. The fact of the matter is that people had seen triangle aircraft at night. And the sightings inspired the Testors model aircraft, which sold 700,000 units. Almost a million people bought a scale model aircraft of the presumed Nighthawk. Seems pretty well known to me.

People inside the Manhattan project literally shared nuclear secrets with the Soviet Union. Not very good at keeping secrets...

@pnptcn Manning didn't "expose" classified information. Manning stole the information and sent it willy nilly.

The guy who can't prove he has a degree and made mistakes in his forgery of the document that supposedly proves he worked for the govt?

It's only illegal to publicly expose secret evidence. He can talk, he just can't talk about secrets outside closed door hearings.

Area 51/Groom Lake was where they kept recovered/stolen/bought MiG aircraft. Now we know the program was called Constant Peg but the US didn't want the Soviets to know they had a fleet of Soviet aircraft and American pilots and mechanics trained to fly and maintain them. They brought pilots into Groom Lake to fly against MiGs in secret, then those pilots would teach the rest of their squadron. Now the information is talked about openly, but nobody cares that Area 51 was where the military was conducting mock air battles away from prying eyes.

There's no conspiracy among witnesses. Eyewitness testimony is laughably unreliable, with studies showing that people misremember speeds just by asking an estimate for the "car accident" and "car crash". Say "crash" and people add 10-20 mph in their brain. When you can't identify something, your brain fills the blanks. That's why the pile of clothes looks like a monster when you open your eyes in the middle of the night.
