  1. Ignoring the money laundering issue, the question of value is subjective. If a painting is confirmed to be a da Vinci you have an item with extreme historical significance. If someone replicated his style to make a modern painting, you have a nice painting but not one made by THE guy. You could teach a half dozen people in the world to make perfect forgeries and get as many faux Leonardos as you want, but that's not valuable. It's like if you found gold under every rock. The more you have the less valuable it becomes. Genuine da Vincis have a limited supply. No more can be made. And if you have a painting that might be a genuine your subjective evaluation will take into account that you're "betting" that it's a genuine piece.
