@Perisemiotics The democratically elected president had already had one election overturned in 2004 thanks to ballot stuffing and voter intimidation. The democratically elected president passed laws against freedom of assembly, freedom of speech and freedom of press. He was also known for excessively prosecuting or slapping bogus charges on his political opposition. He ordered cops to crack down on protesters, and paid hired thugs to help the violence. He fled the country, his own party disavowed him, and the democratically elected parliament relieved him of his duties since he was gone. This democratically elected president you love would have cops beat you, criminals beat you, your journalists arrested, make you unable to protest, arrest your political leaders. That's the man you defend. A coward in a suit who had people murdered when the riot police fired steel slugs designed to disable car engine blocks into crowds.

@Perisemiotics Georgia didn't attack "ethnic Russians", they attacked separatist fighters.

@marceloorellana5726 False. Ukraine did it physically in 1917-1921. The reason they were one of the founding members of the Soviet Union was because even though they had to make peace with the Bolsheviks, they fought hard enough to secure themselves as a nation and were not absorbed into the Russian republic. Nothing on the rules says they must do it themselves. Portugal had British help against Spain. The US had French help against the British. Russia took their chances. Now their army is getting bloodied and Ukrainian artillery's reach encompasses beyond the Russian border. If Russia wasn't a nuclear power, at this point China, Japan and Finland would be claiming their disputed territories. The world isn't fair. Wear a cup.

How is it a step towards nuclear war? It's two more nations that are off limits. That means peace. 14 thousand were killed on BOTH SIDES. Three thousand Ukrainian servicemen. Five thousand separatists. Most deaths occurred in the first two years of fighting. Military forces killing each other isn't a genocide.

Using a small tactical nuke would have consequences. I'd like to remind you that the UK and France are nuclear armed nations.

@charlessevigny Doesn't matter. They were in possession of them and the agreement was that they'd give them up in exchange for security.

@charlessevigny I'm going to try again. If you put an ad out saying you lost your phone and you'll give a hundred dollars reward, and I find the phone, even though I don't have the code to unlock the phone if I give it to you I'm kind of expecting the hundred dollars. You said you'd do something for X, and then you went back on your deal. The keys don't matter. The core and explosive lensing are the difficult parts to build as you need physicists and nuclear engineers to not only acquire fissile materials but also figure out how to achieve criticality. The mechanism that prevents triggering the weapon can be disassembled and replaced by a new one. It's like a locker room cabinet. If you abandon it with your padlock there, someone may use bolt cutters to get your padlock out and then use your cabinet with their own lock. Finland and Sweden will not remain neutral. If NATO is such an existencial threat to Russia, maybe they should stop encouraging countries to join. People will not die, because Russia can only bully non-NATO countries.

If Russia did not want to get encircled it should have stopped pissing off so many neighbors.

@ExplorerBob "Endanger" Finland by making it stronger and impossible to attack? Why would Finland as a NATO nation be in danger if Russia can't attack it without triggering WW3, but safer by keeping itself weak?
1
@ExplorerBob When the tables were turned around, the US didn't invade. They negotiated. Khrushchev also realized that Castro was a loose cannon and could use the nukes so he removed them. This isn't a threat to Russia. This is securing Europe. Is a secure Europe a threat to Russia? What were they planning? It won't endanger Finland. Now Finland will be untouchable.
1
@ExplorerBob It's not the Cold War anymore and Ukraine does not have nukes. Stop the false equivalency.
1
@dee-vee It's also easy for fools to believe appeasement will work again after it failed time and time again.
1
They believe in propaganda because they're not unbelievably stupid to the point of believing that appeasing leads somewhere?
1
We'll push towards peace. By making war unbelievably costly. Anyone who wants war, pays for it with blood.
1
@marceloorellana5726 By that logic no nation was ever a sovereign nation. The US belonged to the UK. Portugal belonged to Spain. You make yourself a sovereign nation by spilling the blood of whoever says you aren't. Seems to me Russia cannot contest Ukraine's sovereignty, which makes it a sovereign nation.
